A paver installation is more than the visible surface. The joints between individual units can be especially vulnerable when sand is already depleted. Existing sealer and paver material also change the approach. Whitening, peeling, or patchiness may indicate coating failure rather than dirt, while natural stones such as limestone and travertine can be damaged by chemistry that may be suitable for compatible concrete. How Paver Cleaning Actually Works
The process starts with an inspection of the paver material, joint depth, existing coatings, isolated stains, loose or settled areas, drainage patterns, and visible surface wear. Contamination is then identified before chemistry is selected. Petroleum generally calls for degreasing, while rust, mineral deposits, efflorescence, and general surface buildup can require different treatments.
After pretreatment and appropriate dwell time, larger areas can be cleaned with properly configured surface-cleaning equipment, with controlled detail work around borders and restricted areas. Persistent stains are treated individually instead of repeatedly increasing pressure across the entire installation. The pavers should also be evaluated as they dry because wet concrete temporarily appears darker and can conceal fading, residual discoloration, and uneven results.
What Homeowners Are Rarely Told About Paver Cleaning
More pressure does not guarantee a cleaner paver. Once removable contamination has been released, additional force can expose aggregate or alter the texture without removing an absorbed or chemical stain.
The sand between the pavers matters. Some disturbance can occur during cleaning, particularly in deteriorated joints, but significant joint-sand loss should not automatically be dismissed as normal.
Wet color can be misleading. Saturated concrete looks darker and richer. Once it dries, normal UV fading and surface wear become visible again. Trying to pressure-clean that faded color back into the paver can cause damage.
Old sealer can look like contamination. Whitening, patchiness, or uneven color may require coating restoration rather than increasingly aggressive washing.
Why Some Paver Stains Need a Different Treatment
One cleaning solution cannot address every stain. Petroleum can penetrate porous concrete and leave residual shadowing even after repeated degreasing. Rust and irrigation deposits may require compatible specialty treatments, while efflorescence behaves differently from ordinary surface buildup.
This is also why aggressive acid use can create more problems than it solves. Chemistry has to be compatible with the actual paver material and surrounding surfaces. Proper chemical selection reduces the need to rely on mechanical force and helps prevent permanent etching or discoloration.
When Cleaning Leads to Re-Sanding or Paver Sealing
Re-sanding should be based on actual joint condition rather than automatically added to every cleaning project. If substantial joint material is already missing or cleaning reveals deep joints, restoring the joint material may be appropriate before the project is considered complete.
